in the wake of a mammoth

site-specific installation, museum display, negative photograph of fossil, reflection of fossil, Geological Museum Budapest, 2003

Created for an exhibition curated by Dóra Maurer at the Geological Museum of Budapest, the work responded to a large mammoth trace fossil in the museum's collection.

A photographic negative of the fossil was installed in front of the original and aligned so that, from a particular viewing position, the traces in the two matched.

At the point of alignment, the positive and negative almost cancelled one another and the image nearly disappeared. With even a slight change in the viewer's position, it flickered back into visibility.
